These guided, half-day learning journeys are designed to deepen our connections with Kohala’s natural and cultural landscape, create space for meaningful exchanges between people and place, and share in mālama ‘āina (care for the land) in this place we call home.
February 17, 2022—The first in a four-part series, this session will provide an overview of the different types of cooperatives in Hawaiʻi and how they vary but share a common foundation and values. This series is intended for members of cooperatives and anyone interested in learning more about co-ops. Refer to the event website for more information. There is no cost to attend and registration is required in advance.

February 26 through April 16, 2022—Hawai‘i Island farmers and gardeners interested in deepening their kinship with ‘āina and ‘ike Hawai‘i are invited to apply for The Kohala Center’s Ōhāhā Mahi ‘Ai program. Emphasizing traditional Hawaiian knowledge and practices while also incorporating regenerative western approaches, Ōhāhā Mahi ‘Ai focuses on creating and strengthening conditions for ‘āina momona by nourishing soil, learning about native crops and diverse cropping systems, observing and adapting to the natural world, and promoting mahi ‘ai health and well-being.
March 17, 2022—The goal of The Kohala Center’s ‘Eke Project is to sustain an important water source for Kohala by protecting the forested summit region surrounding Pu‘u ‘Eke at Kawaihae Uka. Over the next five years, we plan to engage in stewardship practices to guard this sanctuary of native forest from non-native animals and plants. Members of the Kohala community are invited to attend one of our upcoming talk-story sessions to learn more about this project and share their mana‘o.
