March 19, 2022—Community members of all ages are invited to join in our 2022 Hoa‘āina Stewardship Experiences! These guided, half-day learning journeys are designed to deepen our pilina (relationships) with Kohala’s natural and cultural landscape, create space for meaningful exchanges between place and people, and share in mālama ‘āina (care for the land) in this moku we call home.
This Hoa‘āina Stewardship Day will be hosted in the Koaiʻa Corridor, a 243-acre riparian forest restoration area encompassing Luahine and Waiakamaliʻi streams. Koaiʻa Corridor reforestation is an ongoing project initiated in 2009 by the State of Hawaiʻi, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Natural Area Reserves System, facilitated by private landowner partners of the Kohala Watershed Partnership, Parker Ranch and Queen Emma Land Company, and supported by hundreds of community stewards. Together, we have outplanted various native species throughout the corridor, totaling more than 60,000 plants!
To make this event safe for all, we are limiting space to no more than 15 participants, and requiring face masks to be worn when within 10 feet of other participants outside of your household. Details on where to meet and what to bring will be provided the afternoon before the event. For more information, please contact Mahina Patterson at mpatterson@kohalacenter.org or 808-887-6411.
