Prior research has shown that nitrogen entering coastal environments from cesspools and stormwater runoff can contribute to increased algae blooms that inhibit coral growth and vitality. ‘Ahu‘awa and ‘aka‘akai, two plants native to the Hawaiian Islands, uptook and reduced nitrogen levels in salt water in the research study, suggesting that planting them in nearshore environments could help reduce a key coral stressor. Please join and learn with us about these amazing native plants and their potential role in local reef conservation efforts.
