May 19, 2018—Agricultural producers are invited to participate in this free workshop to learn recordkeeping essentials and discover the benefits of Farm Service Agency programs. Presenters include Maile Woodhall, The Kohala Centere's agricultural outreach specialist, and Farm Service Agency staff Lester Ueda, county executive director, and Linda Kow, farm loan programs manager.

Join Kaʻahahui ʻO Ka Nāhelehele in partnership with The Kohala Center’s Ke Kumu ‘Āina team for a morning of meaningful work at ʻŌuli Park, a community park-in-progress located along Kawaihae Road and Keanuiʻomanō Stream. Stewardship activities will include outplanting monitoring and maintenance, invasive species control, and trail clearing/building.

June 4–7, 2018—The Kū ‘Āina Pā School Garden Teacher Training Program’s 2018 Summer Intensive will introduce teachers to the Hawai‘i School Garden Curriculum Map and identify strategies to integrate it with the Hawai‘i State Department of Education’s Nā Hopena A‘o (HĀ) cultural framework. The four-day training will address four fundamental components of teaching and learning in a school garden: A Sense of Place, Living Soil and Living Plant, Nourishment, and Nature’s Design.

Cover Crop Field Day: Lecture, farm tours, and soil health demonstrations

June 30, 2018—The Cover Crop Field Day will include a discussion on common cover crops in Hawai‘i, soil health benefits associated with cover crop use, and cover crops and insect management. Drs. Ted Radovich, Koon-Hui Wang, and Amjad Ahmad from the University of Hawai‘i’s College of Agriculture and Human Resources will lead discussions in the morning and early afternoon, followed by on-farm activities at The Kohala Center’s Demonstration Farm including cover crop field showings, soil sampling, and soil health testing. Amy Koch, assistant director for soil science at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, will provide an overview of NRCS cover crop resources and services for Hawai‘i’s farmers.
