Managing Tourism and Sunscreen Pollution Through Ecologically Effective Solutions

November 6, 2019—Join us for this free presentation by Dr. Craig Downs, one of the leading international experts on sunscreen pollution and marine environments. Increased tourism can result in harm to local ecological resources such as coral reefs, especially when not properly managed. More visitors means greater use of sunscreens and other personal care products, resulting in pollution of not just beach waters, but wide expanses of coastlines. What are the chemicals that are toxic to wildlife and people, and how do they degrade our ecological resources? What concentrations do we find these chemicals in the environment, and at what levels do they pose a threat?

Hoa‘āina Stewardship Day

November 23, 2019—Journey with us into the Koai‘a Corridor at one or more of our Hoa‘āina Stewardship Days! These experiences are designed to deepen our kinship with Kohala and our watersheds, restoring our ability as a community to engage and build healthy relationships with our native environment once again. Depending on the environmental conditions of the day, we will learn protocols such as oli (chants) and pule (prayers, blessings) for entering sacred spaces and encouraging growth and resilience, remove invasive plants and weeds, plant native trees and shrubs, and nurture young trees to grow healthy and strong.

Mālama Kahalu‘u community work day
(Kahalu‘u, Hawai‘i Island)
December 7, 2019—Join us and fellow community stewards to help care for Kahalu‘u Beach Park. We will spend a few hours together painting the pavilion, railings, and benches, pulling weeds, and picking up litter. All ages are welcome!
Please bring:
• Reusable beverage container
• Reef-friendly sun protection
• Clothing that can get dirty
We’ll provide all painting supplies, coffee, water, snacks, and pizza!
