Volunteers needed for storm cleanup

January 14, 2015 (West Hawaii Today)—The Kohala Center will hold cleanup day beginning at 8:45 a.m. Saturday in the Keokea Beach Park parking in Kapa‘au. Cleanup will focus on Keokea Beach Park, Niuli‘i Stream and Konea O Kukui Garden of Peace and will include removing debris from the shoreline area, clearing and restoring waterways, removing fallen trees, replacing a foot bridge and moving rocks.

January 13, 2015 (Big Island Now)—Kamanamaikalani Beamer, Ph.D. has been appointed as The Kohala Center’s next president and chief executive officer. According to a release issued Tuesday by The Center, Matthews Hamabata, Ph.D., current serving president and CEO of The Kohala Center, will retire after founding the organization in 2000.

Turtle Talk is Thursday at Kahalu‘u

January 7, 2015 (West Hawaii Today)—Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center turtle biologist Rachel Silverman will give a once-a-month talk about Hawaiian green sea turtles in the small pavilion at Kahalu‘u Beach Park. Honaunau receives grant for garden

December 17, 2014 (West Hawaii Today)—Honaunau Elementary School recently received a $2,500 grant from the Hawai‘i Island School Garden Network to support a part-time coordinator for its learning garden program. Started by garden educator Melissa Chivers in 2008, Honaunau Elementary’s school garden is currently staffed by FoodCorps Hawai‘i service member Jessica Sobocinski and part-time garden educator Malani Souza.
