A Handful of Seeds, Seed Saving Curriculum

This publication presents an introductory seed-saving curriculum linked to California Content Standards. The topic of seed saving is vast, and A Handful of Seeds is intended to be a starting point for delving more deeply into this rich and fascinating realm. Botany on Your Plate

This standards-based curriculum weaves together nutritional health, mathematics, language arts, and social studies with investigative science. This is a great site for free resources. There’s a wide assortment of free downloadable lesson plans and projects by grade level. Although aligned to California DOE standards, it easily translates to Hawai‘i DOE standards.

Eat Think Grow
EAT THINK GROW provides short-term and long-term support for school garden education and farm to school programs in the Pacific Northwest. However, the lessons can easily be modified to suit school gardens in Hawaii. They integrate garden education into the classroom, design garden beds and create annual and year around garden plans, train teachers, and regionalize the food in your cafeteria. This valuable site contains free, downloadable lesson plans for grades K-5.
Edible Education
This free online course from the University of California, Berkeley highlights 15 speakers who are leaders in the food industry. From farmers, congresswomen, and professors to ranchers, marketers and chefs, you’ll learn about the history of food in America, the Farm Bill, sustainable farming, marketing food to children, and more. With the tremendous support of the Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES Curriculum Council, the P/NW BOCES Curriculum Center decided to undertake the development of a K-12 Education for Sustainability Curriculum in 2008. The Curriculum Center believed this curriculum project is timely, important and urgent and will prepare students for a democratic society, global economy and sustainable future.
How to Build a Keyhole Garden
A keyhole garden is the ultimate raised-bed planter. It is often built in the shape of a circle measuring about 6 feet in diameter that stands waist-high and is notched like a pie with a slice cut away. A hole in the center holds a composting basket that moistens and nourishes the soil. The garden, which from above looks like a keyhole, can be built with recycled materials and requires less water than a conventional garden.

The Junior Master Gardener program engages children in novel, “hands-on” group and individual learning experiences that promote a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the mind. JMG encourages youths to be of service to others through service learning and leadership development projects and rewards them with certification.
Kids Cook Farm-Fresh Food
Kids Cook Farm-Fresh Food is an introduction to California’s diverse farm-fresh produce, explaining how farmers grow it in ways similar to the students’ own gardens at school. The hope is that learning how to cook the produce and discovering the delicious flavors of the colorful fresh fruits and vegetables will provide students an incentive for lifelong, healthful eating habits and an interest in the working landscape of California.

The Mālama ‘Āina Foundation is a curriculum development organization supported by the Consortium for Hawaiʻi Ecological Education (CHEE). The consortium has brought together various institutions to develop educational, project-based programs at all levels that would train Native Hawaiian and other students in the ecological sciences to become better stewards of Hawaiʻi’s unique environment. National Farmers Union Education Materials

Nutrition to Grow On
An innovative curriculum for grades four through six that offers teachers a direct link between the garden and nutrition education. Nine lessons are designed to teach children and their families about nutrition by relating each lesson to a garden activity. The curriculum uses the garden to integrate disciplines, including science, mathematics, language arts, history, environmental studies, nutrition, and health, while reinforcing some of the California academic content standards. School gardens are wonderful sources of food and beauty and outlets for physical activity; they can also help students discover fresh food and learn to make healthier food choices. Our Growing Place
Our Growing Place is an easy to follow tool-kit for instructors with little or no experience in cooking or gardening. It is designed as a community based after-school and summer day camp program but can be adapted for use in school.
