July 16, 2016—Spend the day in the beautiful Koai‘a Corridor helping young native trees settle into their new home along Luahine Stream. Meet at The Kohala Center’s offices at 8 a.m. and bring along a water bottle and sack lunch. Boots or sturdy shoes are required. Be prepared for any kind of weather: hot or cold, sunny or cloudy, windy or calm, wet or dry...knowing Kohala, probably all of the above! We provide tools, gloves, plants, snacks, and cold drinking water. We’ll work, hike, explore, picnic, and then work a bit more, returning to Waimea by 3 p.m.

August 4, 2016—Attend this FREE training session and discover the basics of QuickBooks, an accounting and bookkeeping computer program that helps businesses track income and expenses, create invoices and statements, and produce financial statements. The workshops will help farmers and food producers decide if the software is right for them, and also provide an overview of federal crop insurance programs. August 12, 2016—AgriLogic Consulting, one of the largest developers of crop insurance programs for the USDA, will be conducting a FREE strategy session for agricultural producers in Hawai‘i. The goal of this agribusiness session is to encourage producers to become familiar with crop insurance and other disaster programs available to them that can assist them in the event of a major disaster.
August 20, 2016—Our second Waiwai Weekend will focus on one of our favorite subjects—food! We invite you to join us and our special guests Nancy Redfeather, Jerry Konanui, and Dr. Albie Miles for a conversation about how we can all contribute to greater food security and support local food production in Hawai‘i.
September 24, 2016—This event features a seed exchange and celebration of the first anniversary of Friends of the Libraries, Kona (F.O.L.K.)’s Community Seed Library at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. October 10–14, 2016—The Kohala Center’s Ke Kumu ‘Āina program takes place during the fall intersession and offers middle school students opportunities to learn about Hawai‘i Island’s native plants. Participants will engage in scientific field research in the Kohala Watershed, learn to identify native plants, and understand the environments in which they grow. Students will meet each day in Waimea and enjoy hands-on workshops and field trips to Kohala Mountain and beyond.
October 14–16, 2016—Hawai‘i Farmers Union United (HFUU) will host this year’s convention for the first time on Hawai‘i Island, at OK Farms in Hilo. This will be an opportunity for HFUU members, the farming community, and local food advocates to come together to learn about issues such as regenerative soil, trellis farming, tropical fruit growing, the future of hemp and medicinal cannabis in Hawai‘i, and much, much more.
