Apply to be a sustainable agriculture intern during the fall break—the ‘āina is your classroom!
October 10–14, 2016—The Kohala Center’s Ke Kumu ‘Āina program takes place during the fall intersession and offers middle school students opportunities to learn about Hawai‘i Island’s native plants. Participants will engage in scientific field research in the Kohala Watershed, learn to identify native plants, and understand the environments in which they grow. Students will meet each day in Waimea and enjoy hands-on workshops and field trips to Kohala Mountain and beyond.
October 14–16, 2016—Hawai‘i Farmers Union United (HFUU) will host this year’s convention for the first time on Hawai‘i Island, at OK Farms in Hilo. This will be an opportunity for HFUU members, the farming community, and local food advocates to come together to learn about issues such as regenerative soil, trellis farming, tropical fruit growing, the future of hemp and medicinal cannabis in Hawai‘i, and much, much more.

November 4–6, 2016—This experiential workshop will use garden-based science lessons and activities to explain NGSS science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas. It will relate these three key NGSS dimensions to the Hawai‘i School Garden Curriculum Map. Participants will apply the three NGSS dimensions in designing and implementing learning-garden science activities.
November 11, 2016—Become a “Ginja Ninja” for a day! Help established native trees survive and thrive by clearing invasive ginger from the forest understory. Meet at The Kohala Center’s offices at 8 a.m. and bring along a water bottle, sack lunch, and snacks. Boots or sturdy shoes are required and rain gear is highly recommended. Be prepared for any kind of weather: hot or cold, sunny or cloudy, windy or calm, wet or dry...knowing Kohala, probably all of the above! We provide tools, gloves, and cold drinking water. We’ll work, hike, explore, picnic, and then work a bit more, returning to Waimea by 3 p.m.
December 2, 2016—Join us on an expedition into the Koai‘a Corridor to plant native trees and shrubs such as koai‘a, wiliwili, and ‘ākia. Outplanting provides volunteers of all ages and abilities with an enjoyable combination of work and play, breathtaking scenery, and time with old and new friends. At the end of the day you’ll be able to step back and actually see the positive results of your efforts!
