KWP Volunteer Day: Ginger control at Pu‘u Pili
July 30, 2016—Become a “Ginger Ninja” for a day! Help established native trees survive and thrive by clearing invasive ginger from the forest understory. Meet at The Kohala Center’s offices at 8 a.m. and bring along a water bottle and sack lunch. Boots or sturdy shoes are required. Be prepared for any kind of weather: hot or cold, sunny or cloudy, windy or calm, wet or dry...knowing Kohala, probably all of the above! We provide tools, gloves, plants, snacks, and cold drinking water. We’ll work, hike, explore, picnic, and then work a bit more, returning to Waimea by 3 p.m.

Farm Financial Recordkeeping and Crop Insurance Workshops

August 4, 2016—Attend this FREE training session and discover the basics of QuickBooks, an accounting and bookkeeping computer program that helps businesses track income and expenses, create invoices and statements, and produce financial statements. The workshops will help farmers and food producers decide if the software is right for them, and also provide an overview of federal crop insurance programs. Protecting Your Investment with Crop Insurance

August 12, 2016—AgriLogic Consulting, one of the largest developers of crop insurance programs for the USDA, will be conducting a FREE strategy session for agricultural producers in Hawai‘i. The goal of this agribusiness session is to encourage producers to become familiar with crop insurance and other disaster programs available to them that can assist them in the event of a major disaster.

Ke Kumu ‘Āina: A weeklong exploration of Hawai‘i Island’s native plants for middle school students

October 10–14, 2016—The Kohala Center’s Ke Kumu ‘Āina program takes place during the fall intersession and offers middle school students opportunities to learn about Hawai‘i Island’s native plants. Participants will engage in scientific field research in the Kohala Watershed, learn to identify native plants, and understand the environments in which they grow. Students will meet each day in Waimea and enjoy hands-on workshops and field trips to Kohala Mountain and beyond.

2016 Hawai‘i Farmers Union United State Convention

October 14–16, 2016—Hawai‘i Farmers Union United (HFUU) will host this year’s convention for the first time on Hawai‘i Island, at OK Farms in Hilo. This will be an opportunity for HFUU members, the farming community, and local food advocates to come together to learn about issues such as regenerative soil, trellis farming, tropical fruit growing, the future of hemp and medicinal cannabis in Hawai‘i, and much, much more.
