Keiki Fishing Derby to be held at Waikua‘a‘ala Fishpond
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—October 1, 2013—Children ages seven to fifteen are invited to register for a Keiki Fishing Derby to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, October 26, at Kahalu‘u Beach Park. This fun community event is being organized by the Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center. Cleanup day rescheduled for Kahalu‘u Beach Park
KAILUA-KONA, Hawai‘i—January 29, 2013—A community cleanup day for Kahalu‘u Beach Park that was postponed due to high surf has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 2. The new event now includes two volunteer opportunities: a project to repair the rock wall surrounding the onsite fishpond from 8 a.m. to noon and the cleanup of the beach area from 10 a.m. to noon.

Lecturer speaks of ancient Kona breadfruit plantation

Kohala Center awarded contract to operate education center at Kahalu‘u Bay
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—December 3, 2011—The Kohala Center has entered into a 10-year contract with the County of Hawai‘i to establish a learning center—the Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center—at Kahalu‘u Beach Park. The Bay Education Center offers a unique visitor education experience—one that teaches respect and reverence for the natural and cultural resources of Kahalu‘u Bay.

Community invited to Kokua Kahalu‘u Day
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—April 20, 2011—The Kohala Center, the Rotary Club of Kona, Starbucks, and the County of Hawai‘i Department of Parks and Recreation invite the community to a Kokua Kahalu‘u Day on Saturday, April 30, from 7:30 a.m. until the work is finished. Volunteers are needed to help paint the main pavilion, north restrooms, and the Ocean Safety Tower and to work on the cleaning and rebuilding of the Waikua‘a‘ala Pond rock walls, which were damaged by the recent tsunami.

Stories of Kahalu‘u and Keauhou
KAMUELA, Hawai'i—March 5, 2009—“Stories of Kahalu‘u and Keauhou,” a history of Kahalu‘u and Keauhou and recorded life stories of kupuna who lived there, will be aired this month on Na Leo ‘O Hawai‘i channel 53. The three-part series features kupuna Mitchell Fujisaka and Allen Wall sharing their stories with cultural historian Kepa Maly. Maly gives additional background on the ahupua‘a gleaned from old Hawaiian language newspapers.

Kahalu‘u preservation, education programs continue
KAMUELA, Hawaii—January 9, 2009—The bright blue ReefTeach T-shirts will continue to be a familiar sight at Kahalu‘u Beach Park this year, thanks in part to a State grant for preservation and marine conservation education programs at the bay. The Kahalu‘u Bay Project received its third Hawaii Tourism Authority’s (HTA) Natural Resources Program Award for the project’s programs in “marine education, marine resource monitoring, environmental restoration, and community engagement activities that aim to preserve and restore the natural environment and special character of the shoreline and coral reef at Kahalu‘u Bay.”
