The Kohala Center is currently offering two full-tuition scholarships to qualified high school students to attend either the CATALYST Academy, or the CURIE Academy, both hosted by the Diversity Programs in Engineering at Cornell. Qualified applicants may apply for one, or both of the programs. Scholarship recipients must cover their own travel costs. Scholarship consideration is offered only to Hawai‘i Island high school students who submit the Scholarship Application Form through The Kohala Center.
The CATALYST Academy is a one-week summer residential program for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who excel in math and science. The mission of the CATALYST Academy is to advance diversity in engineering and its related disciplines. During the CATALYST Academy, Cornell University’s world-renowned faculty and graduate students lead participants in classes, lab sessions, and project research. Social events, panel discussions, and other out-of-classroom activities provide participants with opportunities to network informally with Cornell faculty, staff, and students.
Scholarship applicants must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior in high school with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- “Rising sophomore” is equivalent to a current freshman
- “Rising junior” is equivalent to a current sophomore
- “Rising senior” is equivalent to a current junior
- Current seniors are not eligible
