April 9, 2015—The West Hawai‘i Marine Mammal Response Network (WHMMRN) is encouraging community members to sign up to become volunteers. A free training session for new volunteers, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in Kailua-Kona.
February 7, 2015—Please join us for our first beach clean-up of 2015 on February 7 from 9 a.m. – 12 noon. We can use as many hands as possible as we will be cleaning up not only the beach areas, but also the parking lot and area along the wall adjacent to the main road. Plastic buckets, bags, and scoopers for cigarette butts will be provided, but please bring your own gloves. Check in at Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center to pick up your materials for clean-up. December 13, 2014—Citizen Science is a volunteer program to monitor and track environmental conditions at Kahalu‘u Bay. Volunteers collect weekly samples to help the center track the health of the bay, understand how events such as algae blooms impact water quality and the bay’s overall health, and act to correct any problems before they impact Kahalu‘u’s vibrant and colorful marine life. Anyone interested in becoming a part of Citizen Science is invited to attend the next volunteer training day, which will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, at Kahalu‘u Beach Park, next to the KBEC van.
