Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in School Learning Gardens
(Waimea, Hawai‘i Island)
November 4–6, 2016—This experiential workshop will use garden-based science lessons and activities to explain NGSS science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas. It will relate these three key NGSS dimensions to the Hawai‘i School Garden Curriculum Map. Participants will apply the three NGSS dimensions in designing and implementing learning-garden science activities.

KWP Volunteer Day: Ginger control at Pu‘u Pili

November 11, 2016—Become a “Ginja Ninja” for a day! Help established native trees survive and thrive by clearing invasive ginger from the forest understory. Meet at The Kohala Center’s offices at 8 a.m. and bring along a water bottle, sack lunch, and snacks. Boots or sturdy shoes are required and rain gear is highly recommended. Be prepared for any kind of weather: hot or cold, sunny or cloudy, windy or calm, wet or dry...knowing Kohala, probably all of the above! We provide tools, gloves, and cold drinking water. We’ll work, hike, explore, picnic, and then work a bit more, returning to Waimea by 3 p.m.

KWP Volunteer Day: Koai‘a Corridor

December 2, 2016—Join us on an expedition into the Koai‘a Corridor to plant native trees and shrubs such as koai‘a, wiliwili, and ‘ākia. Outplanting provides volunteers of all ages and abilities with an enjoyable combination of work and play, breathtaking scenery, and time with old and new friends. At the end of the day you’ll be able to step back and actually see the positive results of your efforts!
Meet at The Kohala Center’s offices at 8 a.m. and bring along a water bottle, sack lunch, and snacks. Boots or sturdy shoes are required and rain gear is highly recommended. Ke Kumu ‘Āina Afterschool Program
(Waimea, Hawai‘i Island)
January 11–May 24, 2017—The Kohala Center’s free Ke Kumu ‘Āina Afterschool Program takes place every Wednesday from 1:30 to 5 p.m. throughout the second semester and offers elementary and middle school students opportunities to learn about Hawai‘i Island’s native plants. Participants will learn to identify native plants and their cultural uses, understand the environments in which they grow, and engage in scientific field research. Students will meet at Ulu Lā‘au – Waimea Nature Park and enjoy hands-on workshops, ‘āina-based activities, and healthy snacks at the heart of Waimea town. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the second semester.

Farm Financial Recordkeeping and Crop Insurance Workshops

January 25, 2017—Attend this FREE training session and discover the basics of QuickBooks, an accounting and bookkeeping computer program that helps businesses track income and expenses, create invoices and statements, and produce financial statements. The workshops will help farmers and food producers decide if the software is right for them, and also provide an overview of federal crop insurance programs.
