Ke Kumu ‘Āina Afterschool Program
(Waimea, Hawai‘i Island)
January 11–May 24, 2017—The Kohala Center’s free Ke Kumu ‘Āina Afterschool Program takes place every Wednesday from 1:30 to 5 p.m. throughout the second semester and offers elementary and middle school students opportunities to learn about Hawai‘i Island’s native plants. Participants will learn to identify native plants and their cultural uses, understand the environments in which they grow, and engage in scientific field research. Students will meet at Ulu Lā‘au – Waimea Nature Park and enjoy hands-on workshops, ‘āina-based activities, and healthy snacks at the heart of Waimea town. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the second semester.

‘Āina After School
(Kapa‘au, Hawai‘i Island)
April 14–May 26, 2017—The Kohala Center’s free ‘Āina After School program takes place at Kohala Middle School Garden every Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. throughout the fourth quarter and offers middle school students opportunities to learn about gardening. Participants will learn to identify common garden plants and their uses, understand the environments in which they grow, and engage in scientific field research. Students will enjoy hands-on workshops, ‘āina-based activities, and healthy snacks. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the fourth quarter.

Full STEAM Ahead! Summer 2017

June 5–23, 2017—Waimea Middle School is offering a three-week “Full STEAM Ahead!” exploratory program this summer for incoming middle school students across Hawai‘i Island that will celebrate “Mālama Honua” – caring for the planet. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each weekday, students will explore the North Hawai‘i watershed and ocean with lessons that blend environmental science with ‘Ike Hawai‘i—hands-on lessons in technology, art, personal wellness, and the health of their island home.

Big Island ‘Ohana Fest

August 25–27, 2017—Big Island ‘Ohana Fest is a drug/alcohol free, family-friendly 3-day music festival focusing on local musicians, small local businesses, education, and family. Big Island ‘Ohana Fest is proudly being presented by KWXX. Aside from having 28 different acts on the main stage, there will be a plethora of food and craft vendors, an area dedicated to educational entities and social services, a secondary stage with cultural and educational speakers/activities, and an area dedicated to childrens games and activities. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to the Kohala Center and PARENTS, Inc.

Ke Kumu ‘Āina Alaka‘i ‘Ōpio Program – Fall Break 2017

October 9–13, 2017—Attention high school students! The Kohala Center is offering an exciting opportunity for interested students to gain leadership and career experience through fieldwork in the Kohala Watershed. Students will be eligible to receive up to $250 for successfully participating in field days and completing additional program requirements, including an education and career pathway plan.

October 9–13, 2017—The Kohala Center’s free Ke Kumu ‘Āina Fall Break Program offers middle school students opportunities to learn about forestry and watershed conservation. Participants will learn to identify common native forest plants and their uses, understand the environments in which they grow, and engage in scientific field research. Students will meet in Waimea and enjoy daily field trips into the Kohala watershed, hands-on workshops, and ‘āina-based activities.

Aloha ‘Āina Day: Outplanting Native Plant Species

Saturday, October 14, 2017—E aloha ʻāina kākou! Join us for our first Aloha ʻĀina Saturday of the year in the Kohala watershed! Learn about The Kohala Center’s ʻāina-based work and education initiatives including the Kohala Watershed Partnership and Ke Kumu ʻĀina. Take part in ecological restoration and climate change mitigation through outplanting native plant species in targeted watershed areas.
