ReefTeach Volunteer Training

April 14, 2016—Now is your chance to help save our ocean! The Kohala Center’s ReefTeach Program aims to educate visitors and residents alike on how to avoid damaging corals and take care of honu (green sea turtles) and reef animals. ReefTeach is a volunteer-powered program of well-trained and dedicated ocean stewards who talk with visitors about what corals are, the different types of fish and invertebrates in the bay, and reef ecology. We also inform visitors and residents of honu basking behavior and help reduce disturbances to honu in the bay and throughout the Hawaiian Islands. We are seeking new volunteers to join our ReefTeach efforts at Kahalu‘u Bay in Kahalu‘u-Keauhou and at Waialea Bay (Beach 69) in Puakō.

Climate change: How is it impacting Hawai‘i?

July 25, 2017—Dr. Chip Fletcher from the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa will discuss several aspects of climate change in an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session with the community.

Big Island ‘Ohana Fest

August 25–27, 2017—Big Island ‘Ohana Fest is a drug/alcohol free, family-friendly 3-day music festival focusing on local musicians, small local businesses, education, and family. Big Island ‘Ohana Fest is proudly being presented by KWXX. Aside from having 28 different acts on the main stage, there will be a plethora of food and craft vendors, an area dedicated to educational entities and social services, a secondary stage with cultural and educational speakers/activities, and an area dedicated to childrens games and activities. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to the Kohala Center and PARENTS, Inc.

Kahalu‘u Bay Beach Cleanup and Sunscreen Swap
(Kahalu‘u, Hawai‘i Island)
April 14, 2018—Kick off Earth Week and National Volunteer Week by helping us keep Kahalu‘u Bay clean!
Beach Cleanup (8–9 a.m.)
Bring the ‘ohana and help us keep litter and microplastics from entering the ocean.
Sunscreen Swap (8–11 a.m.)
Bring your sunscreen containing oxybenzone (or any other hard-to-pronounce active ingredients) and get a free sample* of reef-friendly sunscreen from All Good, Stream 2 Sea, Bare Republic, Goddess Garden, or Avosol!
