In addition to the Exchange, there will be a number of exciting activities and opportunities to learn more about island backyard gardening and food production. There will be workshops on Chickens, Beekeeping, Kalo, as well as childrens' activities and a localvore potluck at noon. An added bonus is a native plant sale and a fruit tree giveaway.

His presentation will detail the role of the science of ecology and the management of biodiversity in developing sustainable farming and discuss some of the key social, economic, and political obstacles to sustainable food and farming systems in Hawai‘i.

February 27, 2016—The Cover Crop Field Day will include a discussion on common cover crops used in Hawai‘i, seeding rates, and incorporation techniques. Dr. Ted Radovich, associate specialist at the University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources will lead a classroom discussion in the morning, followed by a tour of a winter field trial at The Kohala Center’s Demonstration Farm and one other farm (to be determined) in Hāmākua. Amy Koch, assistant director for soil science at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, will conduct soil health demonstrations.
