November 7, 2015—Dr. Albie Miles from University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu will discuss the history of agriculture and the environmental quality and human health risks associated with modern, industrial farming practices. His presentation will detail the role of the science of ecology and the management of biodiversity in developing sustainable farming and discuss some of the key social, economic, and political obstacles to sustainable food and farming systems in Hawai‘i.

February 27, 2016—The Cover Crop Field Day will include a discussion on common cover crops used in Hawai‘i, seeding rates, and incorporation techniques. Dr. Ted Radovich, associate specialist at the University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources will lead a classroom discussion in the morning, followed by a tour of a winter field trial at The Kohala Center’s Demonstration Farm and one other farm (to be determined) in Hāmākua. Amy Koch, assistant director for soil science at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, will conduct soil health demonstrations.

April 9, 2016—Building a sustainable food system in Hawai‘i requires farmers and gardeners to understand their seed-saving goals and collectively work together to improve genetic diversity of locally adapted seed varieties. Join us for a day of presentations and demonstrations by locally and nationally renowned seed experts Forest Shomer, Glenn Teves, Russell Nagata, and Lyn Howe, followed by a potluck, seed exchange, and tastings of trial varieties.
