January 17, 2015—The Kohala Center is calling upon community members to assist with environmental restoration at Kēōkea Beach Park and the community of Niuli‘i in North Kohala in the wake of a powerful storm that brought heavy winds and flooding to the Hawaiian Islands earlier this month.
Volunteers are needed for a community cleanup day scheduled for Saturday, January 17, starting at 8:45 a.m. at the Kēōkea Beach Park parking lot, 52-128 Keokea Beach Road in Kapa‘au. Cleanup will focus on Kēōkea Beach Park, Niuli‘i Stream, and Konea O Kukui Garden of Peace and will include removing debris from the shoreline area, clearing and restoring waterways, removing fallen trees, replacing a foot bridge, and moving rocks. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, machetes, rakes, shovels, and plenty of aloha. Refreshments and beverages will be provided compliments of KTA Superstores. Due to safety concerns, participants are asked not to bring small children or pets.
