March 7, 2015—In the eleven miles from Kawaihae to the summit of Kohala Mountain at Kaumu o Kaleiho‘ohie, the annual rainfall varies from a couple of inches to more than 150 inches. Wow! The Kohala Watershed Partnership (KWP) is blessed to work across this gradient, and for the first time we are going to hit three different climate zones in one volunteer work day.
We will start in the morning in the Koai‘a Tree Sanctuary, where we will dig up fountain grass and transplant native seedlings. Then, we will head halfway up the slope to Magic Valley for lunch and clearing some invasive poka vines. The day will end with outplanting some native wet forest plants at the top of the Koai‘a Corridor. Whew! What an adventure!
Volunteers will meet at The Kohala Center office (65-1291A Kawaihae Rd) in Waimea, then head up the mountain in our 4×4 van. Wear boots or sturdy shoes, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. Bring rain gear, sack lunch, water bottle, and a dry change of clothes (just in case!). We will provide tools, gloves, snacks, drinking water, and transportation!
