September 13, 2014—We started calling this narrow valley in the middle elevations of Waiakamali Stream “Magic” quite a few years ago, because this ecosystem represents a unique assemblage of native plants seen few places on Kohala. In a 7-minute walk from the truck up above, you descend into a native wet forest, with a flowing stream, and birds singing. It is beautiful.
We will be controlling invasive weeds inside the valley, especially the banana poka vine, and non-native grasses, too. It’s the right time of year for collecting pilo and ‘ōhiʻa seeds as well. We will provide gloves, tools, snacks and drinking water. Wear boots or sturdy shoes, and bring a backpack with your lunch, water bottle, and some rain gear. This is a great day to bring along the kids or a neighbor, but everyone needs to be comfortable walking along steep valley walls and sometimes slippery rocks in the stream.
Meet at The Kohala Center office (65-1291A Kawaihae Rd) at 8:30 a.m. We will return by 3:30 p.m. at the latest. Please RSVP by September 11 by email: coordinator@kohalawatershed.org.
