September 24, 2022 (RESCHEDULED)—Community members of all ages are invited to join in our 2022 Hoa‘āina Stewardship Experiences! These guided, half-day learning journeys are designed to deepen our pilina (relationships) with Kohala’s natural and cultural landscape, create space for meaningful exchanges between place and people, and share in mālama ‘āina (care for the land) in this moku we call home.

This Hoa‘āina Stewardship Day will be hosted in the Koaiʻa Tree Sanctuary, a 14-acre native dry forest preserve fenced in the early 1950s. The purpose of the fence was to protect a handful of remaining native trees that had survived along the slopes of Waiakamaliʻi stream, which runs through the site. This little forest has survived with protection, and many of the native species have naturally regenerated. The Sanctuary continues its purpose today under the State of Hawaiʻi’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife with assistance from staff and hoaʻāina of The Kohala Center.

To make this event safe for all, we are limiting space to no more than 15 participants, and requiring face masks to be worn when within 10 feet of other participants outside of your household.
