August 10–11, 2018—For the second year, the Hawai‘i Island New Farmer and Rancher Expo brings together emerging producers with non-profit, private, and government resource organizations, as well as area buyers and experienced farmers.
The goal of the Expo is to provide participants with an understanding of all aspects involved in establishing a viable commercial farm business on Hawai‘i Island.
FRIDAY (12:30 to 8:30 p.m.): Speakers will present on various topics including land, financing, crop selection, labor issues, new farmer training programs, food safety, pest control, non-traditional farming methods, and many others. Also offered will be panel discussions and Q&A with experienced farmers and local buyers and information booths hosted by various local resources.
SATURDAY (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.): Farm tours will include on-site observation and discussion with local operations.
Morning (9:30–11:30 a.m.)
- North Kona: Aquaponics
- North Hilo: Korean Natural Farming Methods
- North Kohala: Orchard Farming
Afternoon (2–4 p.m.)
- North Hilo: Animal Husbandry/Piggeries
- Hāmākua: Farmer Training Programs
ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED and is open until August 8. Registration fee for Friday and Saturday – $50; Friday only – $35.
The event is sponsored by AgriLogic Consulting, Pacific Gateway Center, and The Kohala Center, with a grant provided by the USDA Risk Management Agency.
