November 7, 2015—Dr. Albie Miles from University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu will discuss the history of agriculture and the environmental quality and human health risks associated with modern, industrial farming practices. His presentation will detail the role of the science of ecology and the management of biodiversity in developing sustainable farming and discuss some of the key social, economic, and political obstacles to sustainable food and farming systems in Hawai‘i.

About the Presenter: Dr. Albie Miles is assistant professor of sustainable community food systems at the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu. He received his Ph.D. in environmental science, policy and management from University of California, Berkeley in 2013. Dr. Miles’ research explores the relationship between farming system biodiversity and ecosystem services from agriculture and the structural obstacles to sustainable food and farming systems. He has worked at the UN FAO and the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at University of California, Santa Cruz.
