Led by wildlife biologist and award-winning photographer Jack Jeffrey, this two-mile expedition will take us through native montane rainforest into the Maulua Tract of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. This 32,733-acre refuge located on the windward slopes of Mauna Kea is habitat for 14 indigenous (of which eight are endangered), 13 migratory, and 20 introduced bird species. This habitat also serves as home to ‘ōpe‘ape‘a (Hawaiian hoary bat) and 29 rare plant species. We’ll also visit Kaluakauka, “the Doctor’s Pit” where Scottish botanist David Douglas met his demise in 1834, and enjoy a retelling of Douglas’ mysterious death. Learn the history of Hakalau and about current conservation efforts in the refuge.
Registration fee includes boxed lunch and four-wheel drive transportation into and out of the Refuge.
