Waimea’s Kohala Center Awarded $90,000 EPA Grant

January 9, 2018 (BigIslandNow.com)—The Kohala Center in Waimea on the Big Island is receiving a $90,000 environmental protection grant that it applied for in 2017, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today, Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018.

The Kohala Center’s “Farm to Forest” project is using school gardens at middle schools to promote environmental literacy on Hawai‘i Island.

The Kohala Center’s Farm to Forest: Giving back to the ‘āina

December 4, 2017 (West Hawaii Today)—In late November, The Kohala Center’s Ke Kumu ‘Āina environmental education program began a new two-year initiative called Farm to Forest that will include a teacher planning workshop.

“The program is an aina-based education initiative that supports teachers and students in essential learning in the outdoor classroom,” said Ke Kumu ‘Āina Director Mahina Patterson.

Honoring Hawaii’s indigenous language and culture: Waimea HA Design Team selected to connect community with the ‘āina

September 22, 2017 (West Hawaii Today)—Two middle-school teachers, a seventh-grade student and two Kohala Center employees were announced in mid-September as a Na Hopena A’o (HA) Design Team by the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE)’s Office of Hawaiian Education (OHE).

Twenty school/community design teams were selected total throughout the state.

Rain gardens protecting waterways
