April 14, 2017 (West Hawaii Today)—In celebration of Earth Day, residents can choose from six volunteer activities around the island, each focusing on ways to give back to the land. Organized by The Kohala Center, the official name for the day is La Malama Honua, meaning “a day to care for our Earth” in Hawaiian.

December 16, 2015 (North Hawaii News)—Teachers gathered at Paniau in Puako for a field workshop, provided by The Kohala Center’s HI-MEET (Hawaii Meaningful Environmental Education for Teachers) program on Dec. 5. They know where authentic learning takes place and it’s not necessarily in the classroom. Observation, questions, data collection, analysis; these are the science activities that this group of middle and high school teachers will soon be sharing with their students.

July 21, 2015 (Big Island Now)—Volunteers are needed by the Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center for the ReefTeach and Citizen Science programs at Kahalu‘u Bay and Beach Park. The ideal volunteer loves the beach and has an interested in protecting the bay and its coral reefs, fish, and turtles.

June 24, 2015 (Big Island Now)—The Kohala Center’s Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center has a new “home-on-wheels” at Kahalu‘u Beach Park, replacing the previous van that was in service since 2011. More than 12,000 patrons each year used the original vehicle as an education center and snorkel rental concession.

May 5, 2015 (West Hawaii Today)—Five enthusiastic students at Kahakai Elementary School stood in front of a large mural where hand-painted pictures of monk seals shined on a 4-foot by 8-foot canvass behind them. The young scholars spent more than two months crafting the drawings of the endangered species and joyfully expressed their knowledge and pride of the animal and a mural that has taken on a life of its own.

May 1, 2015 (Big Island Now)—Turtle biologist Rachel Silverman of Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center will “talk story” about honu, Hawaiian green sea turtles, at the center’s next Turtle Talk event on Thursday, May 14. During the talk, attendees will learn about different types of turtles that can be found in Hawai‘i, their importance to the ecosystem, the threats they face, and how individuals can do their part in protecting them.
