Train the Trainers 2013
On September 13-15, 2013, HPSI offered an advanced three-day “Train the Trainers” Workshop in Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i Island.
It is designed to help dedicated individuals from each island broaden their seed production skills and continue to advance and promote seed work in their respective locales.
This training focused on:
- Furthering seed-saving skills
- Crop selection
- On-farm breeding programs
- Crop diseases and building soil health in the garden to increase disease resistance
- Social media networking tools and protocol
- Developing working models for seed education and seed networks on each island
- Envisioning future goals and requirements
We are inviting people who have experience in seed saving and are willing to make a commitment to working in their locale to help to create and further island seed networks.
Spring Seed Exchange for South Kona

Communty Seed and Plant Exchange
Date: Saturday, May 5, 2013 — 1:00-6:00 p.m.
Location: Kualoa Ranch, Hale Moli‘i Fishpond, just south of Ka‘a‘awa, O‘ahu
Details: You are invited to attend a Seed and Plant Exchange at beautiful Kualoa Ranch on O‘ahu. This may be the first island-wide Seed Exchange event held on O‘ahu. Similar events have been held regularly over the past several years on some of the neighbor islands, attended by hundreds of beginning and avid gardeners and farmers. Details: Come learn the basics of seed-saving: how to select for desirable qualities in plants and grow them for seed, collect, process, and store your seeds. Tips and demonstrations for different kinds of seeds, including papaya, lilikoi, bean, and more. Location: Nā Keiki o Ka ‘Āina in Kapa‘a, next to Papaya’s Natural Foods in the Kaua‘i Village Shopping Center

If you have them to share, please bring cuttings, potted plants, and seeds that are non-invasive, non-GMO, pre-cleaned and free of insects and disease. Presentations about the Kauai Community Seed Bank, la‘au lapa‘au (Hawaiian herbal medicine) and the Coco Palms mālama ‘āina project will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. followed by the pule and exchange at 3:00 p.m. There will be live music by Malama Pono Alstars from 3:00-5:00 p.m. with Cook Islands/Tahitian drumming at 5pm, followed by fire dancing and poi ball performances at the Center’s outdoor stage. The seed lab will be open and offering hands-on activities. This is a great community event where you'll meet all kinds of people who know and love every kind of plant. Sixth Organic Seed Growers Conference

The Sustainable Gardening & Farming Training Course
Date: Saturdays from October 8 to December 17, 2011 from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Location: Regenerations Botanical Garden
As an instructor of the course, Regenerations director Paul Massey provides a focus on plant diversity and seed saving. This semester the course will also feature a hands-on workshop planting kalo (taro), as we rotate our collection of 38 cultivars from Regenerations Seed Garden to the campus. The Seed Garden is also a satellite training site during the course, where students will put into practice the information presented in class. Many students from past semesters have contributed to the Seed Garden over the last year and we—and the plants—are very grateful for their positive energy and hard work.

"Healing our Relationship with Plants" by Paul Massey
