Welcome to the Frameworks for Success in Science Project
Frameworks for Success in Science is a unique project using a Teacher to Teacher (T2T) professional development model to provide elementary school teachers and students in the Hilo Complex Area with the skills to increase student achievement. Participating teachers are provided with engaging science pedagogy and content, leadership skill development, ongoing mentorship, and support from numerous organizations and partners. To date, 41 teachers and over 1,200 elementary students have participated in the project.
The Frameworks for Success in Science Project (“Frameworks”) was originally envisioned by Dr. Pascale Creek Pinner, Hawai‘i Teacher of the Year in 2008. Frameworks was designed to pilot and test an innovative model of professional development that includes sustained engagement for teachers in science subject matter learning, teacher-generated curriculum development, and a cohort of teacher-leaders who provide each other with ongoing instructional support. Funding for the first phase of this model project was obtained through a state-level Math-Science Partnership grant in 2009; project partners include the Hawai‘i State Department of Education, the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, the Aims Education Foundation, and The Kohala Center.
Preliminary evaluation of project implementation suggests that the Frameworks approach is significantly and positively affecting teacher confidence and competence. The project currently involves six elementary schools and state funding will sustain the pilot through the 2012-2013 academic year. The partnership is currently applying to the NSF DR K-12 program for funding that will support project expansion and rigorous research into the efficacy of the Frameworks approach in improving science instruction at the elementary school level.
