The Honaunau School garden, run by Melissa Chivers and Jessica Sobocinski, is more than just a place where flowers and vegetables grow; it is a living classroom where students and teachers can observe, interact with, and learn about the natural world that is responsible for supporting human existence on this planet.
Almost two years since it was completed, The Kohala Center’s Health Impact Assessment on Hawaii County’s Agriculture Plan has garnered national attention and helped produce meaningful effects on the local food system.

We are currently recruiting volunteers for our ReefTeach team!
Kahalu‘u Bay receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. For many visitors, this is their first experience on the reef, and many have little or no knowledge about the reef and its importance to marine life.
ReefTeachers educate visitors about how to reduce their impact on the reef while enjoying ocean activities such as swimming and snorkeling.
ReefTeach volunteers have the flexibility of choosing hours that fit their personal schedules. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate.
For more information regarding ReefTeach or other volunteer opportunities with the Kahalu‘u Bay Project, contact Cindi Punihaole, Volunteer and Public Outreach Coordinator at 808-895-1010 or by e-mail at

Volunteer with the Kohala Watershed Partnership
The Kohala Watershed Partnership community volunteer program involves local residents in stewardship of the forests of Kohala Mountain. One Saturday a month, volunteers meet for a workday that involves weed whacking, collecting native seeds, planting native species, and hiking in the forest. People of all ages and experience levels are welcome to join in for good fun and good work. Most work days run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Bring along boots, rain gear, lunch, and a positive attitude, and the following will be provided: gloves, tools, snacks, breathtaking scenery, and uplifting service.
For further information, contact Melora Purell, Coordinator, at 808-333-0976 or by e-mail at
