Join us for a day of family fun at Kahalu‘u Bay! Help us clean up Waikua‘a‘ala Fishpond by fishing for invasive tilapia in our first-ever Keiki Fishing Derby. Participants will have a chance to win awesome prizes from Fair Wind Ocean Guides, Jack’s Diving Locker, Body Glove, Patagonia, and more!
This event is free, with a suggested donation of $10.00 to register for the Keiki Fishing Derby. All proceeds will help us keep Kahalu‘u Bay a healthy, happy place.

PRIZE CATEGORIES:
- Most Fish Caught (Boy and Girl ages 7-10, Boy and Girl ages 11-15)
- Biggest Fish Caught (Boy and Girl ages 7-10, Boy and Girl ages 11-15)
- Best Homemeade Fishing Pole (Boy and Girl ages 7-10, Boy and Girl ages 11-15)
All tilapia caught will go to Kona Aquaponics, which will raise them for food and use their waste to fertilize their farm.
Participants must bring their own fishing pole, which must be made with a bamboo rod, fishing line, and a size 14 BARBLESS hook. Bait will be provided. Click here for how to make your own bamboo fishing pole. You can purchase everything you need to build your bamboo fishing pole at Pacific Rim Fishing Supplies in Kona, S. Tokunaga Store in Hilo, or your favorite local fishing store. A limited number will be available for sale at the event.
In addition to the Keiki Fishing Derby, there will be plenty of activities for the whole family:
- Learn how to play Hawaiian Games like kōnane, pala‘ie, and hei
- Meet Hoagus Boagus Da Clown
- Face painting for keiki (and keiki at heart)
- Learn coconut weaving from Auntie Mele Waikiki
- Enjoy Hawaiian music
