Environmental Leadership Lab Slated for February
Brown University, in cooperation with The Kohala Center, will
mount its second annual Environmental Leadership Lab for high
school sophomores, juniors and seniors from February 17-26.
Students from across the country will travel to Hawai'i for
a unique opportunity to study the ecological systems of the
Island.
The course will concentrate on three areas of exploration:
volcanology, marine science and rainforest ecology. Course
activities include observation of seismographs recording movement
of magma beneath the volcano, green turtle capture and tagging
at Kiholo Bay, and participation in restoration of a Hawaiian
dryland forest.
Leadership training will be provided by senior-level faculty
at Brown University, which is considered among the finest
undergraduate colleges in the country. Additional faculty
from the Oceans of Hawai'i Program, HPA, TREE Center, Amy
Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden, and Edith Kanaka'ole Foundation
will round out the program.
The Kohala Center is offering $1,000 scholarships to three
Hawai'i Island students to help defray the cost of participating
in this program. Scholarship recipients will be responsible
for paying the $1200 balance of the program tuition directly
to Brown University.
To apply for a scholarship, students must submit all required
application materials directly to Brown University by the
December 14 deadline and also submit a complete copy of the
application to The Kohala Center office by December 14. A
complete application consists of Brown University's Pre-College
Application and Teacher's
Appraisal Form, a copy of your official school transcript,
and a copy of the required application essay.
Applications should be dropped off at The Kohala Center's
office in the Lindsey House in Waimea or mailed to The Kohala
Center, P.O. Box 437462, Kamuela, HI 96743.
Brown University staff will make the final admissions decisions
for the scholarship students, based on The Kohala Center's
recommendations. Scholarship awardees will be announced in
early January.
