I had a great GT class today with our 14 students. We Skyped (video conferenced) with Joshua Silva, a graduate student at UH Manoa who is working on our soil test. He had the lab set up for easy viewing for the students. First he talked about lab safety, and then showed them what he has to wear: closed toed shoes, lab coat, goggles, etc. And then he conducted a couple of tests with the soil – pH and a K test. He also encouraged the students to think about attending college and that college, especially the sciences was “very cool” and “fun.” The students loved this meeting and took what this young local man said seriously. They all took notes of the meeting and talked about it more during lunch. This was a great opportunity to meet GLO 6 – Effective/ethical user of technology.
