Aid available for special summer camp program

Waimea fourth through ninth graders are invited to explore coral reef "cities under the sea," discover connections between reef critters and humans, and learn ancient Hawaiian land and sea conservation practices during a series of July summer camps sponsored by a new public-private alliance. To make the program affordable to many in the community, Waimea Elementary and Middle Schools are offering scholarships for qualified applicants.

Blending ecology projects and Hawaiian cultural studies with camping on palm-lined Ke'ei Beach, a few hundred yards south of Kealakekua Bay, the program promises a wide array of learning experiences.

Camp hosts organizing include the Land Assets Division of Kamehameha Schools' 'Aina Ulu Program, which manages Camp Maluhia at Ke'ei, Jean Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society, Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden staff and cultural educators with whom they work, The Kohala Center and North Hawaii Community Learning Centers (NHCLC) at Waimea Elementary and Middle Schools. Blending fun with exciting project-based learning, the camps will run four-days/three-nights, or seven-days/six-nights and include three well-rounded, healthy meals with a vegetarian option, plus tents, snorkeling equipment, kayaks and other recreational equipment. Participants must bring toiletries and a sleeping bag.

General scholarships from The Kohala Center, North Hawaii Community Learning Centers and private donors mean the camps, which usually run $425-$850 for non-Hawaii residents, will be available with scholastic aid for as low as $250 for one week, or $100 for four days. Scholastic aid applications are available on request. Fees do not include travel to Ke'ei.

Camp dates are July 24-30, July 24-27 and July 27-30. Teacher's workshops will be July 10-16 and 17-23.
