High school agricultural internships offer stipends

KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—May 20, 2014—The Kohala Center is seeking Hawai‘i Island high school students and recent graduates to get their hands dirty this summer as paid interns with its Beginning Farmer-Rancher Development Program. Students may apply now for the program’s two-week agriculture summer internships to be held June 16–27 and July 14–25. Sessions will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Monday–Friday and are based at the program’s Ka Hua ‘Aina farm in Honoka‘a.

Beginning Farmer Training Program accepting applications

KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—December 12, 2013—Ku I Ka Mana, a beginning farmer-rancher training program administered by The Kohala Center, is accepting applications from prospective students for its third cohort. The 18-week course is conducted in Honokaa and begins on Friday, January 31. Application materials may be downloaded at https://kohalacenter.org/farmertraining/application/. The application deadline is Friday, January 10, 2014.

The Kohala Center announces beginning farmer training program

KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—October 25, 2012—United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced $18 million in federal funding to support new farmer training and education programs in 27 states. The Kohala Center received a $562,000 grant to create and deliver Kū I Ka Māna, a beginning farmer training initiative. The County of Hawai‘i is providing the necessary matching funds to secure the USDA grant.
