Moloka‘i School Garden Network

Visit the Web site.

The purpose of the Moloka‘i School Garden Network program is to inspire the next generation of Earth Stewards who will develop a love and appreciation for their island home and their planet. Through this program they will be able to navigate two worlds successfully: 1) their hanau (birthplace) to which their piko is attached: an island with a rich heritage and legacy left by their Hawaiian ancestors, which serves to guide them still in the ways of living pono in their relationships to each other and the natural world; and (2) a modern age facing unprecedented global challenges to which we must all respond collectively and creatively to resolve.

We hope to ignite confidence in our youth and engender leadership and good citizenship as they begin to learn about and model sustainability. We seek to inspire them to explore pathways that advance their personal development, education, and future vocations. We support what each school envisions for their school gardens: large- and small-potted or raised-bed gardens. We wish to empower the students, teachers, staff, and community to come together in partnership to respond to the need for interactive learning, availability of healthy foods on campus and in school meals.

Sust ‘āina ble Moloka‘i Mission
The people of Moloka‘i integrating the island’s legacy of ‘āina momona (abundant land) with modern sustainability concepts to build a Sust ‘āina ble Moloka‘i rooted in traditional knowledge and supported by emerging green practices and industries.

What we offer
Sust ‘āina ble Moloka‘i has been working in Moloka‘i High School building a two-acre permaculture farm and demonstration site for over a year now. We are also integrating a composting system and rain water harvesting system. We see this site as the piko, or center, so that we may hold workshops for teachers and community as it is already being used as an interactive site for the high school AG production program. This is a place were students and teachers can come and see what plants and trees would be right for their schools.
