Puanani Burgess joins The Kohala Center’s board of directors

Keiki Fishing Derby to be held at Waikua‘a‘ala Fishpond
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—October 1, 2013—Children ages seven to fifteen are invited to register for a Keiki Fishing Derby to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, October 26, at Kahalu‘u Beach Park. FoodCorps program launches in Hawai‘i
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—September 23, 2013—FoodCorps, a national non-profit program in partnership with the AmeriCorps service network, addresses childhood obesity and food insecurity in underserved communities. This year, FoodCorps has selected The Kohala Center as the host site for the state of Hawai‘i’s FoodCorps Program. Operating in fifteen states, FoodCorps has added Hawai‘i, California, and New Jersey to its roster for the 2013-2014 service year.

Keakealani presents “Nā mo‘olelo o nā ‘āina aloha: Stories of beloved lands” from 2–3:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, Wentworth 1, and from 5:30–7 p.m. on Friday, September 27, in the Keauhou III Ballroom at the Sheraton Keauhou Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay. Native Hawaiian scholars awarded 2013-2014 Mellon-Hawai‘i fellowships
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—August 12, 2013—Five Native Hawaiian scholars were recently selected for fellowships by the Mellon-Hawai‘i Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program to produce original research and advance their academic careers. Now in its sixth year, the Mellon-Hawaiʻi Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides support for Native Hawaiian academics early in their careers, and for others who are committed to the advancement of knowledge about the Hawaiian natural and cultural environment, Hawaiian history, politics, and society. The research being pursued by this year’s cohort focuses on a unique and critical selection of Hawaiian literary, language, pedagogical, and political topics.

Waipuni Kahalu‘u Web site offers innovative approach to water issues
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—July 24, 2013—A new Web site that teaches users about the natural processes that contribute to the fresh water supply in the Kahalu‘u region on Hawai‘i Island is now online and available to the public. The Web site, Waipuni Kahalu‘u, represents a unique collaboration between the Edith Kanaka‘ole Foundation, the Watershed Professionals Network, the Redlands Institute, and The Kohala Center. The project was funded by a grant from the Coastal and Ocean Climate Applications Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Program Office.

KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—April 16, 2013—Readers of Edible Hawaiian Islands voted for The Kohala Center as their choice of “Best Nonprofit” in the publication’s seventh annual Local Hero Awards competition. The awards program celebrates local heroes in 61 food communities in the United States and Canada. EBT Double Dollar Days at Hawai‘i Island farmers markets announced
Program gives EBT participants greater access to fresh, healthy food during holiday season

KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—December 3, 2012—On December 22 and 23, eight Hawai‘i Island farmers markets will hold EBT Double Dollar Days, during which SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called food stamps) recipients can use their EBT cards to receive double the amount of their food purchases. On the EBT Double Dollar Days, EBT participants can visit EBT booths at island farmers markets and receive food bucks or a receipt for double the amount of their original purchase. For example, EBT participants can purchase $20 worth of eligible goods for $10 of EBT funds.

County of Hawai‘i Energy Sustainability Program Five-Year Roadmap available for public review and comment

Garden-based nutrition workshop for teachers
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—October 26, 2012—Hawai‘i Island educators who teach or participate in school garden programs are invited to attend a workshop on garden-based nutrition from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, November 10, at the Hawai‘i Academy of Arts and Science in Pahoa. This professional development workshop for school garden and class teachers is part of Eat-Think-Grow—an initiative created by The Kohala Center’s Hawai‘i Island School Garden Network (HISGN) program. Eat-Think-Grow is made possible with financial support from the Hawai‘i Island Beacon Community’s Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Program. This workshop is intended to give new insights into the foundations of good nutrition.

The Kohala Center announces beginning farmer training program
USDA grants seek to train and support next generation of American farmers
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—October 25, 2012—United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced $18 million in federal funding to support new farmer training and education programs in 27 states. The Kohala Center received a $562,000 grant to create and deliver Kū I Ka Māna, a beginning farmer training initiative. The County of Hawai‘i is providing the necessary matching funds to secure the USDA grant.

Learn why and how to save seed at weekend workshop

KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—October 11, 2012—Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook is the site for the annual West Hawai‘i seed exchange and a weekend workshop on seed production and seed saving methods coming up in November. The 10th Annual West Hawai‘i Community Seed Exchange will be from 3–5 p.m. Friday, November 2, at the garden. KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—(August 3, 2012)—The Hawai‘i Island Meaningful Outdoor Experience for Students (HI-MOES) program encourages middle and high school science and mathematics teachers to apply for field research opportunities for the 2012-2013 school year. Administered by The Kohala Center and in association with the Kohala Watershed Partnership, HI-MOES empowers eligible teachers with critical resources to conduct place-based education—such as classroom mini-grants, transportation and logistical support—they or their schools are likely to need.

KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—(July 31, 2012)—Three Native Hawaiian scholars were recently awarded Mellon-Hawai‘i Fellowships to advance their academic careers. Marie Alohalani Brown, doctoral candidate in English at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UH Mānoa), and Kaipo Perez III, doctoral candidate in zoology with a focus in marine ecology at UH Mānoa, received doctoral fellowships. Katrina-Ann R. Kapā‘anaokalāokeola Oliveira, Ph.D., Geography (2006), UH Mānoa, received a postdoctoral fellowship.

Report ties expansion of a local food system to community health
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—March 15, 2012—Expanding production and access to locally grown food in Hawai‘i County could decrease hunger, increase community food security, and strengthen the island’s economy according to a report released today by The Kohala Center. Prepared in partnership with the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture and Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research Hawai‘i, the report is a health impact assessment (HIA), which helps to identify and address the health effects of a proposed project or policy.

KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—February 10, 2012—The Kohala Center has been selected as the 2012 winner of the Small Business Success Award in the Nonprofit Category by Hawaii Business magazine. The Kohala Center was one of six winners and 12 finalists for the magazine’s SmallBiz Success awards announced last week. Other categories receiving awards were community service, family business, innovation, long-term achievement, and new business.

Kohala Center awarded contract to operate education center at Kahalu‘u Bay
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—December 3, 2011—The Kohala Center has entered into a 10-year contract with the County of Hawai‘i to establish a learning center—the Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center—at Kahalu‘u Beach Park. The Bay Education Center offers a unique visitor education experience—one that teaches respect and reverence for the natural and cultural resources of Kahalu‘u Bay.

Gallery supports Kohala watershed restoration
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—November 29, 2011—In appreciation for the Kohala Watershed Partnership’s (KWP) efforts in re-establishing the native forest mauka of Pelekane Bay, Gunner and Elli Mench of Harbor Gallery in Kawaihae recently donated $5,000 to the partnership. In 2009, the Menchs decided to support a local organization that was contributing to the betterment of native forests, since most of the woodwork in their gallery is made from native woods of Hawai‘i Island. Since then, they have donated to KWP nearly $16,000 or 10 percent of the proceeds from wood shows they hold twice a year at the gallery.

KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—October 26, 2011—The Kohala Center has received a one-year grant from the USDA to expand EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card access to six farmers markets on Hawai‘i Island, thus providing participants in federal nutrition assistance programs with greater access to nutritious food.

West Hawai‘i Seed Exchange set for November 5
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—October 19, 2011—Island farmers and gardeners who save seed are invited to attend the annual West Hawai‘i Seed Exchange 2–4 p.m. Saturday, November 5, at the Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook. The exchange coincides with the garden's annual Arbor Day Plant Give-Away. Farmers and gardeners are invited to bring saved seed, cuttings, huli, and corms of food crops that grow well in home gardens and on farms.

Learn to save seed at Kaua‘i workshop

Hawaii Energy increases commercial lighting rebates
HONOLULU (April 1, 2011) Hawaii Energy, the State’s energy conservation and efficiency program, is escalating its efforts to encourage businesses to install energy-efficient lighting by increasing existing rebates. Prescriptive rebates will be increased by 20 percent with some incentives doubling, depending on the type of technology. Community organizations invited to participate in CFL bulb exchange fundraiser
KAMUELA, Hawai‘i—November 1, 2010—The Kohala Center, Blue Planet Foundation, and Hawai'i Energy are seeking twenty community organizations or school groups that are interested in participating in a Compact Florescent Light (CFL) bulb exchange fundraising program that will run through April 2011. Each partnering organization will work under an agreement with the Blue Planet Foundation to exchange up to 1,000 incandescent bulbs for CFLs. The Blue Planet Foundation will pay 40 cents for each old incandescent bulb exchanged, up to a total of $400 (or 1,000 bulbs) per group.
