Marine Ecology Study: Comparing Kahalu‘u and Kuki‘o Beach Parks
Students continued a study from their previous school year to compare marine water quality, coral cover, urchins, and coral reef fish species abundance and diversity at two popular West Hawai‘i public beach parks: Kahalu‘u, an open access public beach, and Kuki‘o (Kikaua Point Park), a limited public access beach park. Study components included marine water quality tests, urchin counts, reef fish counts, coral cover surveys, human activity counts, and turtle counts.
