Class Project: A Field Study Comparing Kahalu‘u and Kūki‘o Bays
Students aimed to answer the following project goals: (1) Do the nutrient levels found in bay waters reflect human development along the shoreline? (2) Does algal cover change by location and nutrient levels? Students chose to compare Kahalu‘u Bay, which appeared more developed, and Kūki‘o Bay, which appeared less developed along the shoreline. They looked at substrate composition, in particular algae and coral cover, and water chemistry, specifically nitrates and phosphates, at both areas.
