A Magical 2012: Letter from the Executive Director

As The Kohala Center’s twelfth year serving Hawai‘i comes to a close, I must say this whole experience feels like magic to me. Through the hard work and dedication of staff, volunteers, and community members, we’ve achieved many successes benefiting the ‘āina and people of Hawai‘i. Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center Celebrates First Anniversary

The Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center, which educates tens of thousands of visitors to Kahalu‘u Bay about proper reef etiquette each year.

The Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center (KBEC), a program of The Kohala Center, celebrated its one-year anniversary on December 3, 2012. While our Center staff is to be commended for their commitment and hard work to protect the fragile ecosystem at Kahalu‘u Bay, our success is due in large part to the dedication of over 360 ReefTeach and Citizen Science volunteers.

Bee the Change: What Is Happening to Our Honeybees?

That is the question facing our island, our state, and a significant portion of our planet, as bee colonies worldwide are weakening and dwindling. An upcoming program called “Bee the Change” will take place on January 25, 2013 from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. at the Gates Performing Arts Center (GPAC) at Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy in Waimea. The program will shed some light on the plight of our honeybees, and what we can do to help them.

Seed Basics Workshops: The Root of Food Security

Diversifying the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally is essential to Hawai‘i’s quest to be more self-reliant and secure when it comes to food. The fifth and final two-day Seed Basics Workshop recently took place on Hawai‘i Island, providing attendees with fruitful information about seed growing, botany and biology, selection, harvesting, cleaning, and saving of various types of seed.
