Lanakila Learning Center

The Lanakila Learning Center is an alternative learning center of Hilo High School.  Our student population consists of teens that thrive in an educational setting that connects traditional academic instruction with experiential learning. Learning style inventories indicate that the majority of our student population learns best in social environments that involve tactile/kinesthetic ("hands-on") learning experiences.

Therefore, project-based learning, field work days, and service learning projects are regularly incorporated into the curriculum.  This helps students to put traditional academics into the context of real life experiences. These portfolio photos depict projects that students engaged in as a part of their Biological Agriscience class.  Learning concepts and skills, such as studying the Nitrification Cycle or calculating stocking ratios, reinforce science and math concepts in a way that makes sense to our students.
