Hawaiʻi County Agriculture Development Plan
FAQ's
What is the County of Hawai‘i Agriculture Development Plan and how will it be used?
The County of Hawai‘i Agriculture Development Plan is a project of the Department of Research and Development. It is intended to update and replace the 1992 Plan. The Plan will guide the County in the use of resources to support agriculture on the island. It will include objectives that can be resolved by County government, advocated for by the County, or referred to other entities. Public/private partnerships will also be identified for various actions.
Who is developing the Plan?
The County of Hawai‘i Department of Research and Development has provided funding to The Kohala Center to develop the Plan. The Kohala Center is partnering with Agricon Hawaii LLC, a local agricultural consulting firm, on the project. An ad hoc community advisory committee made up of diverse agricultural stakeholders will assist Agricon to collect and analyze information and provide ongoing comment during the planning process.
What is the timeframe of the Plan?
It is a five-year plan. The Plan will have reasonable action items with timelines that can be implemented within five years.
Won’t this be just another government plan that sits on the shelf?
No, this Plan will have accountability and oversight written in. Once the Plan is accepted, an oversight committee will convene and will work with the County to implement the Plan and document progress made.
How can I share my visions, ideas, or concerns for agriculture on Hawai‘i Island for consideration in the Plan?
You can submit your comments via e-mail to agplan@kohalacenter.org or call Agricon Hawaii LLC at 885-4666. The planning schedule below outlines the future opportunities for your participation.
